Sunday, June 6 - MEET MACY!

Hello admirers, my name is Macy! I am a 9 month old chocolate lab/american pit bull terrier mix. I was surrendered to the Philadelphia Animal Care and Control shelter (ACCT) by my owners on April 23, 2010. They said they no longer had enough time for me. Its pretty obvious that they never had time for me because when I came into the shelter I knew no basic commands or manners. It is reported that they used to feed me Gritz and Eggs so I'm happy to have a normal dog diet here at the shelter.

Some facts about me:
- I am full of puppy energy which I can't burn off living in the kennels, but once I get a chance to burn some outside I settle down nicely!
- I absolutely ADORE people and attention.
- I am housebroken, but I will need a refresher since I don't get consistent walks here
- I know basic commands like "sit" and "down"
- I am working on my leash walking skills and am doing really well with the help of an Easy Walker harness!
- It is reported that I've lived with children in the past, but because of my energy level the shelter staff don't think I should go home with children under 10 because I might knock them over by accident.
- I am highly treat motivated and am a quick learner
- I LOVE other dogs, but I never learned how to play with them appropriately so some dogs might not tolerate me jumping and rough housing with them
- I will need additional obedience training by whoever brings me home, which I hope someone does soon!

I have a Pen Pal! A Pen Pal is a volunteer who is dedicated to finding me a home. She works with me on regular basis to teach me basic commands, socialize me, and market me to potential fosters or adopters. If you are interested in meeting me, please email my Pen Pal at erin.pawsadoptions@gmail.com for more information!

Wednesday, March 31 - Eddie Gets a Bath!

It was another nice day so Erin came in and let me out in the yard to do my business. We practiced our commands and she shot this video of me showing off!

Afterwards, she brought me in to get a bath. I was a little scared at first. I kept my tail between my legs, but she gave me a peanut butter kong which made me feel better. I behaved myself. I just stood still while she lathered me up and rinsed me off. When she was done, I jumped out of the tub and played with my kong while she dried me off. All in all, I'd say it wasn't too bad!

Saturday, March 27 - Eddie's Sunny Day Photoshoot

It was beautiful this weekend. Erin snapped a few pictures of me hanging out in the yard. Today, Erin heard from someone on the shelter medical staff that I've been really good in the kennel. Once I see someone coming up to me, I drop my kong (which is always in my mouth cause it makes me feel better) and I run up to greet them. I learned that if I don't have a toy in my mouth, I get more treats! I'm catching on!

Sunday, March 21 - Eddie Gets a Lesson on Walking

So, its almost April and I'm still stuck at the shelter. I don't know what I would do with myself if the kennel staff and shelter employees didn't let me have my kong in my kennel. Its so stressful. I hate hearing the other dogs constantly bark. Its scary, loud, and uncomfortable. I'm now getting stressed around other dogs and am having a hard time focusing on Erin while she practices commands with me. I can't wait to get out of here and into a foster home or forever home. I know I'll be more comfortable there and way happier.

Since Erin failed miserably trying to put the Gentle Leader on me (its a harness that goes around my snout that teaches me not to pull on walks) today she decided to try the Easy Walker instead. I didn't mind that one at all, it was actually pretty comfortable. We walked around the yard outside of the shelter and I barely pulled at all. When I did pull, the harness redirected me to face her. I caught on that if I walk at the same pace as her, it wouldn't spin me around. After practicing walking and 'heeling' for a while, we went inside so Erin could snap some pictures of me. She began teaching me 'touch', 'here', and 'watch me'. I also showed Erin a trick that she didn't know that I knew.. 'roll over'! I impressed her! Muhahaha! Now she wonders what else I have up my sleeve. When we were done, she filled my kong with peanut butter and treats and I snuggled back into my bed.

Here are a couple pictures of me wearing my Easy Walker:

Tuesday, March 16 - Eddie is loving this weather!

Erin came by on Tuesday. It was so nice out we spent the whole time outside. I mostly just sat infront of her and chewed on a tennis ball while she scratched my back. We didn't take any pictures - just sat and enjoyed the fresh air!

Sunday, March 14 - Eddie's Day Out!

Today was awesome! Erin came and scooped me out of my kennel. We went outside for what I thought was a walk, but she brought me over to the car instead and I took it upon myself to hop right in the trunk! I had no idea where we were going, but I didn't care. She gave me a bully stick to chew on so I just laid down and enjoyed the ride. When we parked, we got out and walked down the street to this new building. When we got inside I couldn't believe my eyes! There were toys everywhere and a huge open space for me to run around all I wanted (OFF-LEASH)!!

I played with all of the new toys, my favorite was the donut shaped one. I held on to that most of the day (Erin said she is going to buy me my very own). Then another Pen Pal dog, Carl came! We ran back and forth with each other until we were tired. He's a cool guy. Here's a video of us!

Then a couple other dogs came, I said Hi to them and also showed off my tricks. I now know "sit", "paw", "down" and I'm getting really good at trading my toys for treats or other toys. I also took all of my treats very nicely! Erin was proud of me. After a while, we had to make room for another dog so he could have some play time. We got back in the car and I just looked out the window the whole ride. I was pooped. Erin kept saying how good I was! When I got back, Erin got me a peanut butter kong and I laid down for a nap. Today was the best day ever!

Sunday, March 7 - A Beautiful Day at ACCT!

The weather was so nice this weekend! Erin came in on Sunday and we spent some time out in the yard. We went for a walk around the shelter grounds. I pulled a lot so she said this week we will start working with a Gentle Leader so I can learn to walk nicely.

After that, we just hung out in an outside run. There were about 6 tennis balls so Erin and I practiced what she called "trade". The idea behind it was that if I dropped the ball I was currently playing with, she would give me another one. I don't think the second ball was any better than the first, but I was interested so I played along. She had me sit, give her paw, then said "trade" and gave me a new ball to play with. I still need to learn to take things nicely though. We did this for about a half hour. She said we will eventually work on "drop it" and "leave it".

After that, we just sat around and enjoyed the weather. It was nice to just relax and be able to lay in the sun! See:

Wednesday, March 3 - Eddie Learns "Down"!

Today, Erin came and woke me up from a nap again. We went outside so I could do my business, then went right back inside because it was raining. Erin taught me something new today! "Down"! It wasn't that hard, I don't think. She made me sit, then brought the treat to the ground and slowly pulled it away from me, and I just did it! She was happy so that made me happy! We did it a bunch more times, sometimes I forgot to put my butt down, but she let it slide.

See!

Erin found a whole box of tennis balls! WIN! She gave me one, then another, then another and before I knew it I had way too many and I wasn't sure which to play with! I picked my favorite, laid down and chewed on it. I had to switch it up a couple times though.

After playing for a solid hour, I was pooped. Erin got me a frozen treat for my kennel and we called it a night! P.S. We figured out I probably shouldn't live with cats because I will chase them way too much. Ideally, I should be an only pet but could probably live with a laid back female dog who won't mind me NOT sharing toys with her. ;-)

Monday, March 1 - Eddie Gets Some Quiet Time to Relax

Today, Erin came to the shelter and woke me up from a nap. We went outside so I could go to the bathroom. I think she "Eddie-proofed" the outside run because all the toys were put away and I HAD to focus on her! It was fine though cause she gave me tons of yummy treats. We practiced "sit" and "paw", which I already knew but Erin also taught me how to take treats out of her hand nicely.

After a while, we got cold and went inside. She brought me into a quiet office where we practiced more commands. She said I got progressively better! When we were done practicing, I explored the room a bit and found a tennis ball in the corner! WIN! She didn't seem to mind that I found a toy to play with. She laid a blanket down and sat down. I brought the ball over to show her then laid down next to her to take a load off. It was nice, we just sat in the quiet for about 20 minutes while she petted my head.

When it was time to go back to the kennels, Erin got me a yummy frozen treat to gnaw on before I went to bed. It was a good night! Goodnight!

Saturday, 2/27 - MEET EDDIE!

Hi, my name is Eddie. I'm a 3-5 year old pit (possibly catahoula) mix who came to ACCT as a stray. I was found in an abandoned building. No one is sure how long I was there, but I'm quite skinny. Everyone who passes me comments on how striking I am. I have crystal blue eyes and markings that make it look as through I was splattered with paint. I'm extremely athletic and would make a great agility dog. My absolute favorite thing in the world is to play with a ball. My Pen Pal says I'm not allowed to take toys in my kennel because I will chew them apart, but she found one ball that is indestructible. She helps me sneak it inside when no one's looking. It makes me feel better and not so bored in my kennel. I've become depressed since I've come in. I don't get much attention and I'm scared.

When I came in I already knew "sit" and "paw", but since being here I've kind of forgot. My new Pen Pal, Erin is working with me to remember as well as teach me new things like "down", "drop it" and "stay" and to walk nicely on a leash.

A little more about my Pen Pal: She's a volunteer at the shelter who works with me exclusively to teach me new commands and market me to adopters. She comes to see me a few times a week and gives me time away from the shelter. She hopes to get me adopted quickly so I don't have to live in this kennel anymore.

You can see a video of me rolling in the snow here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1vOTQK1tFkA

I would do best in a home where I can run and get my energy out every day. I'm fine with body handling, but because I'm so energetic I probably shouldn't go home with small children. I seem to get along with other dogs, but I'm not sure about cats yet. I haven't met any, but Erin will test me. If you're interested in meeting me, please email my Pen Pal at erin.pawsadoptions@gmail.com or come see me at ACCT (111 W. Hunting Park Ave. Philadelphia, PA)!

Sunday, February 7 - PEETY IS ADOPTED!

On Friday I was adopted! A great guy came in to meet me and decided to add me to his family! His wife has been talking with Erin for a while and the timing was finally right to bring me home! I spent the weekend getting used to my new home, playing in the snow, and exploring the yard! I have my own bed and I get tucked in every night. They say I'm being a very good boy and they love me very much! Thank you everyone who followed my blog, reposted my ads, and pulled for me!

Wednesday, 2/3 - Peety gets a bath!

Last night, Erin came in and told me it was "bath time"! I had no idea what that meant. She brought me into this room with a big silver tub and picked me up to put me in. I was a little freaked out because I had never seen anything like it. I squrimed a little bit, but then calmed down. When I got out of the tub, I got a case of the zoomies and ran from one end of the room to the other, but since the floor was wet I kept sliding into the walls. It was fun! Now, I'm clean and smell so good! Erin couldn't get any pictures because she had her hands full.

I also learned "down"! Erin and I have been working on it for weeks, but I couldn't get the hang of it. She enticed me with these really smelly treats. Once, I realized she wanted me to lay down to get the treat I did it! Then I did it again! I could tell she was proud of me.

Oh, Erin also made a valentine for me for some benefit she is going to tonight! http://aroundmainline.com/happenings/be-mine-on-the-main-line-ii.html

Sunday, 1/31/10 - Peety is introduced to the crate!

Hi Everyone! Its the first day of February, meaning its been a whole month since New Years and I'm still here at the shelter; bringing my time here to 5 whole months.

Yesterday, Erin came to hang out with me. We went for a long walk around the shelter grounds, played in the outdoor runs, then relaxed in a quiet office for a while. It was nice to just chill out and play with a ball in the peace and quiet. While in the office, Erin introduced me to an Airline Crate.. like the picture below. She said it would help me when housebreaking and also keep me out of trouble while my future family is out of the house. She gave me a peanut butter kong, I stepped right into the crate and sat down. She left for a little while and I just enjoyed my peanut butter and didn't mind it one bit! When she came back, I was so excited to see her! After that, we just sat around for a little bit. Then it was time to go back to my kennel. :-(

I really hope my adoption day comes soon. I'm getting anxious and unhappy here. Please, someone save me!

If you are interested in meeting me, please contact my Pen Pal, Erin at erin.pawsadoptions@gmail.com. You can find me at ACCT - 111 W. Hunting Park Ave. Philadelphia, PA.

Sunday January, 24 - Peety's Day Out!

Today, I was given the chance to spend a few hours away from the shelter. Erin brought me to an awesome place called Central Bark. I had the whole place to myself. I had room to run, toys to play with and for once, I was able to act like a real dog. I hope she brings me back next weekend!

Check out a video of my day!

Sunday, January 17 - Please Save PEETY!

Its mid-January, meaning I've been in the shelter for four and a half months now. Its cold, loud, uncomfortable and there are other dogs constantly barking around me. They all sound as scared and lost as I do. I haven't lost hope yet, but I hope someone comes to take me home soon. I need someone patient, someone who will be willing to work on housebreaking with me. I came to the shelter as a stray; who knows if I have ever even lived in a home before! I would greatly benefit from foster care, someone who will temporarily open their home for me and show me the ropes!

Today, since it was rainy and cold outside Erin and I reviewed our commands and she taught me a couple new! Of course, we worked on "sit", "paw", and "stay", but we also worked on "here", "touch" and "leave it"! I'm so smart.

Interested in fostering or adopting me? Please contact my pen pal, Erin at erin.pawsadoptions@gmail.com. I'm located at the ACCT shelter (111 W. Hunting Park Ave. Philadelphia, PA).

Sunday, January 10 - Peety is available for adoption and can go home TODAY!

Over the weekend, I was neutered by the shelter vet staff. This means that when someone comes to adopt me, they don't have to wait a couple days for me to have my surgery and that I can go home with them THAT DAY!

Yesterday, Erin and I worked on our commands. Mostly "lay down" and "stay". We also went for a long walk and I barely pulled at all. I've decided that I don't like staying outside for that long. Its too cold and I start to shiver. Its probably because I need some meat on my bones. I met a couple dogs who were outside playing in the pens, we smelled noses. I wanted so badly to play with them, but we had to go back inside. We practiced more "lay down", which I was way happier doing in doors.

Another week has gone by and I'm still here. Erin gives me a treat every time she walks by my kennel. I think she feels bad for me. Yesterday I got a peanut butter kong and a handful of milkbones!

ACCT is open for adoptions 12-5pm today. Come meet me!
111 W. Hunting Park Ave.

January 2, 2009 - PEETY's New Years Update

So, we've decided that I cannot live in a home with cats. I'm just way too interested. I think they're worried that I would accidentally hurt the cat or something. Its now 2010 and I'm still at the shelter. Since the shelter is full, I'm on the "Urgents List". I hope someone comes to take me home soon.

Erin an I have been working a lot on loose leash walking. I'm using a Gentle Leader and its teaching me not to pull while I'm out on a walk. Erin says I walk like an angel now! We've also been working on "sit-stay" and "lay down". I'm catching on to "sit-stay" nicely. I haven't mastered "down" yet, but I'll get it.

Today, I met another pit mix named Dora. I did awesome! I was interested, but polite with her. Hopefully, I'll be able to have my own home soon and maybe even have a playmate.

Check out Peety's Petfinder page HERE!

I'm located at ACCT. 111 W. Hunting Park Ave. Philadelphia, PA. Please contact Erin if you're interested in fostering or adopting me! erin.pawsadoptions@gmail.com
